FAQs for WA Shipping & Crating

Do I have to pay Washington sales or B&O tax on crating or packaging services?

Yes. In Washington state, delivery charges—including crating, packing, wrapping, and transportation—are included in the selling price and are subject to retail sales tax and B&O tax, even if itemized separately on your invoice

If I’m shipping to Alaska via a freight forwarder in Tacoma, do I still owe Washington sales tax?

You may qualify for a sales tax exemption if the shipment is destined outside Washington and delivered to a designated carrier terminal. Alaskan residents (and other non-contiguous states) can request the exemption using the proper form under RCW 82.08.0269

What’s the best option for shipping a heavy item (150 lb+) within Washington?

For items over 150 lbs, the most cost-efficient way is LTL (Less‑Than‑Truckload) freight or white-glove freight service. Parcel services like UPS/FedEx arHeavy item charges apply above 70 lbs, and LTL is better suited for pallets or bulky shipments

How is dimensional (volumetric) weight calculated for crating and shipping?

Freight carriers charge based on whichever is greater: the actual weight or dimensional weight, calculated by (length × width × height) ÷ freight factor. Washington shippers should anticipate that lightweight but bulky items may be billed on dimensional weight

Are there licensing or regulatory requirements for shipping freight or custom crating businesses in Washington?

Yes. Companies providing moving or logistics services in WA must comply with the Washington Utilities & Transportation Commission (WUTC) licensing and tariff regulations. Operating without proper licensing may lead to penalties

What if I'm shipping hazardous materials or regulated goods within the state?
Any hazardous materials must be packaged, marked, labeled, and documented according to 49 CFR parts 100–185, including shipping papers and UN numbers. Staff must be trained, and certain goods require emergency response documentation and compliant labeling
